Social Roles Lab

Our research group investigates how individuals navigate the social structure, and how the social structure influences perceived and actual characteristics of groups.

Our Research

Overview

We use survey and experimental methods to understand how individuals navigate their social systems. Our core question focuses on how gender roles, personal values, and educational & workplace contexts combine to influence individual decisions. Widespread beliefs that STEM fields do not afford prosocial or collaborative opportunities deters interest in those fields – especially for women and other underrepresented groups.

Current Research Questions

Please consider the following:

Who can create communal opportunities in STEM, and how are these opportunities communicated to potential students or employees?

For individual students or employees? For public trust in science?

How can K12 classrooms disrupt stereotypes about STEM? How can college level STEM majors and extracurriculars offer a range of goal opportunities?
